JEJU-DO ISLAND

Jeju-do is a volcanic island located 130km south of the Korean coast. It is the largest island and the smallest Korean province. One of Jeju's major attractions is the Hallasan, the highest South Korean mountain and extinct volcano that rise 1950 metres above sea level. Also there are another 360 small volcanoes scattered around the island. Jeju is scientifically important for its lava tunnels which in Korean are called Oreum.
These natural ducts where the magma flowed first, are now empty caves, which are among largest in the world. The caves offer the opportunity to conduct scientific research and are popular tourist destinations. The many animals and plants on Jeju are another reason that made it possible to transform the island into a natural reserve. Hallasan is located in the centre of the island. The flora of the Natural Park of Mount Hallasan is unique. 1565 species of plants and about 231 species of animals have been classified so far. Close to the city of Seogwipo there are numerous column-shaped rocks, typical examples of the beauty of the island.
